Baz Bahadur was the sultan of Mandu from 1555 Ц 1561 and Mandu reached heights of grandeur during this period but only for a short time. He had built the palace long before he ascended the throne. It was in 1509 that the wonderful edifice was erected. It stands on the hill above the holy Rewa Kund, a tank, which supplied water by a water lift.
One of the important monuments in Mandu is the Jahaz Mahal. It is an ship like structure was erected by Ghiyas-ud-din, son of Mohammed Shah, for his harem. According to the legends, this harem was home to 15,000 maidens. There are two lakes on the east and west side of the palace that create a perfect illusion of a ship with its rectangular shape.
Champa Baoli is an elaborately constructed step-well, the place was so named as its waters were believed to smell like the 'Champa' flower. A summer retreat of the emperor it houses cool wells, underground rooms (Taikhanas) & subterranean bathrooms.
