Assam's climate is a "tropical monsoon" type and is a temperate region which is uncomfortably humid especially during rainy season.
Winter season starts from the end of October and lasts till late February. The minimum temperature during this period varies between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius. Nights and early mornings are foggy, and rain is scanty.
Summer starts in mid May, accompanied by high humidity and rainfall. The maximum temperature reaches 35 to 38 degrees Celsius.
The monsoon season starts from mid-June and continues till August. Thunderstorms known as Bordoicila are frequent during the afternoons. Spring and autumn seasons are characterized by moderate temperatures.
In Assam, there are lot of educational and research institutes. The state of Assam has six universities, one deemed university, one institute of national importance and several reputed professional institutions.
The colleges of Assam (including medical, engineering and law colleges) are affiliated to Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam University and the Assam Agricultural University.
There are also a large number of higher secondary schools in Assam.
The Assam Government has introduced the policy of free and compulsory education for students up to the age of 14.
Cuisine of Assam is full of exotic and flavorsome dishes that appeal to people with liking for all tastes. So much is the variety of food in Assam that it seems experiment and innovation is an additional ingredient of every Assam delicacy. From starting your day with a cup of hot fresh Assam tea, to ending it with an exquisite sweet dish, Assam cuisine is a gourmet's dream served on a plate.
A traditional meal in Assam begins with a khar, a class of dishes named after the main ingredient, and ends with a tenga, a sour dish. These two dishes characterize a traditional meal in Assam. The food is usually served in Bell Metal utensils made by an indigenous community called Mariya.
The culture of Assam is a blend of tradition, lifestyle, faith, belief and religions. Assam is a land of Aryan & Non-Aryan, numerous tribes & sub-tribes, Mongoloids & Australoids and many more communities of the ancient origin.
The state has a large number of tribes, each unique in it's tradition, culture, dresse and exotic way of life. Diverse tribes like Bodo, Kachari, Karbi, Miri, Mishimi, Rabha, etc co-exist in Assam, most tribes have their own languages though Assamese is the principal language of the state.
Assam has a long history with its evidence of human settlement from all periods in Stone age. The earliest ruler was named Mahiranga. He was followed by many like Hatakasura, Sambarasura, Ratnasura and Ghatakasura. Naraka removed this line of rulers and established his own dynasty.
NarakaТs victory marked the beginning of sanskritization in this region. Kalika Purana mentions about Narakasura, as slained by Krishna. Mahabharata mentions about his son Bhagadatta who fought for Kauravas in the battle of Kurukshetra.
Assamese is the eastern-most language of the Indo-European family of langauges. It is spoken by about twenty million people in Assam on both banks of the mighty Brahmaputra.
The Assamese language grew out of Sanskrit, the ancient language of the Indian subcontinent. However, its vocabulary, phonology and grammar have been substantially influenced by the original inhabitants of Assam, such as the Boros and the Kacharis.
Assam is a state of many ethnic groups of people, it is also a state of many religions. It represents in full the religious diversity of the country. Besides the major religions, some of the tribes also follow animism, and worships nature in its various manifestations. Worship of trees, mountains and rocks are common among tribes such as the Dimasas of North Cachar Hills in the south.
The Hindus, who constitute a majority of the population, themselves practise different diciplines of Hinduism. Sakti temples such as the Kamakhya shrine at Guwahati and the Kechaikhati temple at Sadiya stands testimony to a past in which tantricism was the predominant form of Hinduism. This was followed by its modified form Saktaism, a primitive faith which like tantricism worshipped the female form of God.
